Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Thiago Motta has suffered a suspected broken nose following a bust-up in the tunnel at the end of their 2-0 win against Bastia on Saturday.
The assault took place in the tunnel after the match, in full view of other players, officials and media at Parc des Princes.
CCTV footage of the incident appeared to show Bastia striker Brandão waiting for Motta to approach him before headbutting the Italy international and immediately running for the dressing room.
Motta, meanwhile, was left to angrily pace in the tunnel while his teammates attempted to calm him down.
"What is happening, it's very serious," PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi told reporters. "This is very serious for French football. Not just for Paris Saint-Germain.
"Now the league and referees will have to make a decision. I hope the decision will be a life ban. It's a bad image for French football."
PSG defender David Luiz added: "That is not part of football. I don't agree with this.
"Sometimes on the pitch you are more vulnerable with something and they speak bad things, but that's normal in football.
"But when you wait for someone outside the pitch to do a bad thing. I think that's not acceptable."
