The 2014/15 La Liga season provided the first slice of controversy on Saturday as Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz was denied a dramatic late equaliser at Málaga by a bizarre refereeing decision.
With his side 1-0 down in the 95th minute, Iraizoz came up for a last-gasp free-kick and headed a goal that appeared to have earned his side a point until referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz disallowed the goal.
Apparently, Mateu Lahoz and his officials called for an offside somewhere as none of the Bilbao players involved in the move appeared to be positioned illegally.
"Everyone sees things from a different perspective, although it's difficult for a goalkeeper like Gorka to score a goal like that and have it annulled," Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde told the post-match press conference.
"I don't want to talk to much about the referees, he made his decisions, some were wrong and some were right.
"He must have seen a foul, on someone for something, that's the feeling we have."
Málaga coach Javi Gracia added: "I saw it as a goal. He was more like a striker than a goalkeeper.
"I saw the linesman raise his flag immediately but I don't know why."
