The wind at the Britannia Stadium was playing havoc in the early stages, with neither side able to get the ball down and create anything in the final third.

After a scrappy opening period, Stoke went ahead on 38 minutes thanks to a deflected Adam free-kick but Robin van Persie levelled proceedings two minutes after the interval.

The scores were level for just five minutes, though, as Adam grabbed the winner with a magnificent strike.

Jon Walters headed down a Geoff Cameron cross and fortunately for the Potters, Marko Arnautović miskicked.

That allowed the ball to run to Adam, who hammered home a ferocious 25-yard which curled away from David de Gea and into the top corner.

"It was a great strike," Adam told Sky Sports.

"I have been trying to get more goals recently, and hopefully now I can get more from now until the end of the season."

Stoke boss Mark Hughes added: "We are getting to the point where we are not surprised by Charlie.

"Wherever the ball drops to him outside the area you know he is going to get a shot at goal.

"The winning goal was such a great strike, and the keeper was never going to get anywhere near it."
