Jermain Defoe scored twice in the first half to make it 20 goals in European action, first lobbing Tromsø goalkeeper Marcus Sahlman before coolly slotting home a second on 30 minutes.

The visitors sat back after the break, eager to avoid a thrashing, and as a result the hosts had even more time on the ball and the pace of the match dropped.

But Eriksen came off the bench to seal the victory with a superb goal in the 86th minute.

Eriksen, who replaced Moussa Dembélé in the second period, worked a yard of room after a pass from Kyle Naughton.

The Danish international took two touches and clipped a wonderful dipping shot over Sahlman and into the far corner.

It was only Eriksen's second appearance in Spurs colours following his summer move from Ajax Amsterdam.

"I'm really happy about it. A goal like that in just my second game is something I can only dream of," the 21-year-old told Spurs TV.

"A goal like that is not often something that happens in a game, more often in training! I was happy to see it go in."
