Goal of the day: Ashley Young (England) vs San Marino
Table of Contents
Ashley Young netted the fourth and the finest goals in England's 8-0 demolition of San Marino in Serravalle on Friday.
San Marino, as expected, looked to get plenty of men behind the ball and frustrate England from the off, but they didn't do it very well.
An own goal started the rout followed by goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jermain Defoe made it 3-0 with 10 minutes before the break.
England were running riot by that stage and Young made it 4-0 for the visitors midway through the first half with a long-range strike.
The Manchester United winger crashed a spectacular 35-yard drive past Aldo Simoncini via the underside of the crossbar.
Frank Lampard converted a fifth just before half-time, Wayne Rooney added a sixth in the 54th minute, substitute Daniel Sturridge nodded in a seventh on 70 minutes and Defoe wrapped up the scoring with 13 minutes left.
"I couldn't believe it myself, I was due a goal and it was nice to get on the scoresheet," Young told BBC Sport.
