Artjoms Rudņevs' brilliant volley just after half-time gave European hopefuls Hamburg a 1-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart on Sunday.

With the hosts looking to take control in front of 47,100 at the Mercedes-Benz-Arena, the visitors struck from out of the blue with a stunning shot in the 50th minute.

Dennis Diekmeier free on the right wing and the full-back crossed into the center of the box, where Rudņevs hammered an unstoppable volley past goalkeeper Sven Ulreich and into the net.

What a strike for his 11th goal of the season.

"It was a great goal and a fine shot," Rudņevs told HSV.de after full time.

"But it was perfectly set up Dennis Diekmeier. As the ball came over my only thought was to hit it.

"I am delighted because that goal gave us three points here today."

Hamburg captain Heiko Westermann added: "I must say Rudi is amazing. He stumbled a few times in the first half only to score a dream goal after the break."
