The home side were the better team throughout and took the lead in first half stoppage time with a stunning effort from Berbatov.

Sascha Riether's cross was not properly cleared by Robert Huth and the ball dropped invitingly to Berbatov.

Cool as you like, the Bulgarian striker allowed the ball it to drop on his right boot before unleashing an unstoppable shot past Asmir Begović from 10 yards.

He may frustrate managers with his lack of work-rate but he does give you moments like this, which make it all worth it.

"I feel you always need special, professional players who can make a difference and today it was Dimitar," Fulham manager Martin Jol told Sky Sports.

Berbatov added: "It's all about the practice.

"I practise in training and score against (Fulham goalkeeper) Mark (Schwarzer) all the time. You just need to do something special and you do it.

"It is a good one, but I have better ones."
