Manchester United ensured Liverpool remain without a win this season after claiming a 2-1 victory on an emotionally-charged afternoon at Anfield.
The home side suffered a set-back on 39 minutes when Jonjo Shelvey was handed his marching orders for a reckless challenge on Jonny Evans.
Brendan Rodgers' side, however, still took the advantage through Steven Gerrard when the influential captain scored soon after the break.
But the visitors responded with an immediate equaliser as right-back Rafael curled sublimely over Pepe Reina and in off the far post.
An undermanned Liverpool continued to battle but, with 10 minutes left, Robin van Persie struck the winner from the penalty spot after Antonio Valencia went down in the area following a Glen Johnson challenge.
