Euro 2012 Group B: Netherlands 0-1 Denmark
Table of Contents
Denmark sprang the first surprise of Euro 2012 with a 1-0 victory over the Netherlands in Kharkiv on Saturday.
The Dutch had the bulk of possession and fired shots at the Danish goal at will but came closest to scoring when Arjen Robben's curling effort hit the post in the 36th minute.
The men in orange were made to pay for not converting possession and chances into goals as Denmark took the lead against the run of play in the 24th minute.
Michael Krohn-Dehli picked up a loose ball close to the penalty area, left two defenders standing and shot through the legs of Maarten Stekelenburg from a tight angle.
And when a late penalty appeal for handball against Lars Jacobsen went unanswered, the Dutch knew that it would not be their night.
Bert van Marwijk's men will now need results in their remaining Group B games against top-10 world ranked Germany and Portugal.
Lineups:
Netherlands: Maarten Stekelenburg; Gregory van der Wiel (Dirk Kuyt, 85), Johnny Heitinga, Ron Vlaar, Jetro Willems; Nigel de Jong (Rafael van der Vaart, 71), Mark van Bommel; Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder, Ibrahim Afellay (Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, 71); Robin van Persie
