Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart came within inches of sending his team into the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
City were edged out of the Europa League on away goals last night, but they came so close to pipping Sporting Lisbon in the most spectacular fashion possible.
The Eastlands outfit, trailing 1-0 from the first leg, dug themselves a much deeper hole as Matías Fernández and Ricky van Wolfswinkel put Sporting 2-0 up in the first half.
But two efforts from Sergio Agüero and a penalty from Mario Balotelli offered City hope of turning a remarkable game on its head.
And Roberto Mancini's men almost did the incredible in the last of five minutes of injury-time.
Hart - up for a corner - got on the end of a cross from Nigel de Jong but his header was tipped round the post by Sporting goalkeeper Rui Patrício and there was no time to take the resulting corner.
"I can't believe it, I thought it was in," Hart told ESPN.
"It didn't need to get to that, but football is football. The fans were fantastic tonight and we didn't give them what they deserved in the first half.
"Hopefully we can take some positives out of the second half and move on for the rest of the season."
