The European champions overwhelmed the South American winners throughout the match and they opened the scoring on 17 minutes when Xavi's outrageous knockdown with his heel and subsequent pass found Lionel Messi, who conjured up a cheeky chip over Santos goalkeeper Rafael Cabral.

Xavi then got on the scoresheet himself just seven minutes later, controlling a cut-back from Daniel Alves with his first touch before firing low past Rafael from 16 yards.

The game was effectively wrapped up just before half-time when Cesc Fàbregas stabbed in the loose ball after an Alves cross caused chaos in the Santos area.

And Messi, who was named the tournament's most valuable player, completed the rout in the 82nd minute when he maneuvered around Rafael to roll the ball into an empty net.
