Real Madrid maintained their position at the top of the La Liga table following a 3-2 win over Valencia in a thrilling contest at the Mestalla.

Karim Benzema put Madrid ahead before the break with a wonderful volley and Sergio Ramos doubled the lead on 72 minutes.

Former Madrid striker Roberto Soldado pulled one back for Valencia three minutes later, only for Cristiano Ronaldo to reopen his side's two-goal advantage 11 minutes from time.

But Soldado scored again to set up a tense finish, during which he had a hat-trick goal chalked off for offside, his side hit the bar with a header and also had a penalty appeal turned down.
