The Ivory Coast striker enjoyed a fine season at the Stade Vélodrome, which led to his £24 million transfer to Chelsea in the summer of 2004.

Drogba has played a key role in helping the Blues win three Premier League titles, and he has established himself as one of the best forwards in Europe.

But at 33, it seems Drogba is regarded as surplus to requirement by the Stamford Bridge hierarchy.

And the January arrival of Fernando Torres has led to speculation that Drogba could be offloaded in the summer, when he will have just twelve months left on his contract.

"We want him but, honestly, we don't have the means to pay him," Marseille president Jean-Claude Dassier said.

"He is 33 and in great physical shape. We would love him to come back to us and I would therefore be an idiot to say we are not interested. All the big clubs are interested in him.

"We want to strengthen our squad but we have to watch our budget."
