Soccer world pays tribute to retired Ronaldo

Soccer stars including Kaká, Ronaldinho, Cesc Fàbregas, Andrés Iniesta, Samir Nasri and Rio Ferdinand have led tributes to Ronaldo after the Brazilian legend confirmed his retirement.

Ronaldo brought the curtain down on his glittering career on Monday because his body can no longer meet the demands of the game, ending a magnificent career in which he won two World Cups with Brazil and thrived with some of Europe's top teams.

The news has sent shockwaves through the soccer world and a number of stars have come out on Twitter to pay tribute to one of the most iconic players to have ever played the beautiful game.


Fellow Brazilian Ronaldinho paid tribute to Ronaldo in a post, writing: "Ronaldo was a complete player. An example for all young players," while Ferdinand added: "RONALDO has retired from football...1 of best to ever play the game - injuries prevented him being best ever. gonna have a minutes silence.."

Fàbregas wrote: "Very sad day for football. Brazilian legend Ronaldo retires from football. Ill always remember the 96/97 season... Best player i ever seen in a complete season with 1 team and national team. Joy to watch"

Iniesta said: "Today he said goodbye to football. Thanks Ronaldo for all these years, we've really enjoyed them all!" with Nasri posting: "guys today a legend is retired for me he is the best striker for all time he had everything speed skills technique 1vs1 he is a deam player. i just want say thank you for everything you have done Mr Ronaldo IL FENOMENO."

Kaká added: "Ronaldo, thank you for everything you did for the sport, soccer, Brazil and for the thousands of people around the world. You are an example !! It is with great pride that I can say I played with one of the best soccer player ever. May God continue to bless you in this new phase of your life. You are and will always be the PHENOMENON."
