Villarreal maintained their title credentials as they came from behind to beat Athletic Bilbao 4-1 at El Madrigal.
Spain striker Fernando Llorente opened the scoring for the visitors with a back post header after just seven minutes.
But Villarreal turned the game around before half-time with Nilmar equalizing with a header in the 39th minute and Santi Cazorla capitalizing on a poor clearance to net six minutes later.
Bilbao lost defender Jon Aurtenetxe on 77 minutes for a second bookable offense before Giuseppe Rossi and Jefferson Montero scored further goals to add insult to injury.
