Ricardo Quaresma: Signing for Inter is my biggest regret

Besiktas winger Ricardo Quaresma has revealed that the biggest regret of his career was joining Inter Milan in 2008.

The 27-year-old winger arrived at Inter two years ago after the Nerazzurri paid FC Porto €18.6 million plus Pelé, who was valued at around €6 million.

However, the two-time Portuguese player of the year has had little impact at the San Siro, making 24 appearances over two seasons and was loaned to Chelsea in the middle of his stint.

"My biggest regret was joining Inter," Quaresma told Portuguese newspaper Público. "My happiness and self-confidence were taken away from me.

"At one point I wasn't even called up any more. I felt on the margins of the squad and woke up crying when I had to attend training sessions."

Quaresma was also puzzled by former coach José Mourinho's decision to stop selecting him, as it was the tactician that convinced the Inter hierarchy to purchase him.

He added: "I still haven't understood some things that happened with him.

"As soon as I arrived in Milan, it was made clear to me that I was only signed because Mourinho wanted me.

"Then, suddenly, I stopped playing. It's true I wasn't at my physical peak and watching the games back on television I didn't even recognise myself.

"Mou said on television that I let myself get intimidated by the Inter fans, but I was never afraid of them. I'm not even scared of the supporters here in Turkey, where there is even more media pressure than in Italy.

"The truth is that I spent a very delicate phase of my life in Italy. It would've been better if I had closed my eyes and only woken up now."
