Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Evander Sno was rushed to hospital on Monday after suffering a suspected heart attack during a reserve match.
The 23-year-old collapsed on the field after 63 minutes in the match between Jong Ajax and Jong Vitesse/AGOVV, and was initially treated by the two team medics and a physiotherapist.
A defibrillator is understood to have been used four times before a conscious Sno was taken by ambulance to a hospital in nearby Arnhem.
The match was then called off, and Vitesse chairman Ted van Leeuwen said the player was in a stable condition when the ambulance arrived to take him away from the stadium.
Several footballers have died of heart attacks in recent years, including Marc-Vivien Foé, Antonio Puerta and Daniel Jarque.
