Real Madrid announced on Tuesday afternoon they have completed the signing of Mesut Özil from Werder Bremen for a fee believed to be in the region of €15 million.
The 21-year-old, born in Gelsenkirchen to Turkish parents, shot to fame at this summer's World Cup, where he helped Germany reach the semi-finals.
A statement on the Spanish club's official website read: "Mesut Özil lands at Real Madrid after a standout performance at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
"His unique touch, unmatched individual technique, excellent ball control and deadly last pass make the German midfielder one of the brightest up-and-coming stars in European football."
Bremen sporting director Klaus Allofs said in Bild: "We are respecting the player's wishes to take the next step in his career immediately."
Özil becomes Real's sixth signing this summer and takes their spending to €88 million. Only Manchester City have spent more.
