Portugal winger Nani was ruled out of the World Cup in South Africa on Tuesday, joining a lengthening big-name casualty list with a shoulder injury.
The Manchester United winger picked up the injury in Lisbon during training prior to Portugal flying out to the tournament, but medical staff had been hopeful he would be fit.
However, medical tests on Tuesday morning confirmed Nani will not take part in Portugal's World Cup campaign.
"After tests we conclude he is unfit to participate in the World Cup," read a statement from the Portuguese Football Federation.
Over the past several weeks, Germany skipper Michael Ballack, Ivory Coast star Didier Drogba, Ghana midfielder Michael Essien and England captain Rio Ferdinand have suffered injuries that will keep them from performing in South Africa.
And back in March, England midfielder David Beckham was ruled out of the competition when he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon while playing for AC Milan.
