Manchester United returned to the Premier League with a crushing 5-0 victory over crisis club Portsmouth at Old Trafford.
Wayne Rooney broke the deadlock in the 40th minute before Anthony Vanden Borre turned in Nani's attempted cross on the stroke of half-time.
Richard Hughes deflected Michael Carrick's long-range effort past David James just before the hour mark and Dimitar Berbatov then provided a fine finish to make it 4-0 on 62 minutes.
Portsmouth's afternoon went from bad to worse on 69 minutes as Marc Wilson became the third Pompey player to score an own goal.
