Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey is expected to be out for 12 months after breaking his right leg in two places following a clash in his side's 3-1 win at Stoke City.
The 19-year-old collapsed in agony midway through the second-half following a crunching challenge with Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross, who was shown an immediate red card and left the pitch in tears at the realisation of how serious the problem was.
Arsenal players, including skipper Cesc Fàbregas, looked sickened immediately after the incident and Thomas Vermaelen dropped to his haunches, clutching his face and unable to look.
The Wales international received immediate help with his leg stabilised before he was stretchered off to warm but concerned applause and into a waiting ambulance which left the Britannia Stadium to take him to hospital.
Ramsey's injury comes two years and four days his team-mate Eduardo, on the bench at the Britannia, suffered a badly broken leg at Birmingham City.
Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger told Sky Sports: "I'm not very happy with the tackle.
"I just want to say we know what we are expecting, a battle everywhere, but we have now lost three players - (Abou) Diaby, Eduardo and Ramsey today, a boy of 19 years old - on horrendous tackles.
"It's always coincidence. I don't believe in coincidence when you are hit as many times as we do.
"We know what it is always to be physical against Arsenal and what questions I get in press conferences we don't fancy the physical side of it, that's what the result is."
Fàbregas added on Sky Sports 1: "In five years I've seen three of them, Abou, Eduardo and now Aaron. What can I say. It's difficult.
"You could say we are not protected enough. We are sometimes victims. I'm not complaining, football is like that.
"There are things that are a little too much but three times in five years is a little bit too much."
But Shawcross later expressed his sympathy for Ramsey and said in a statement: "There was absolutely no malice in the challenge.
"I would never go out to hurt a fellow professional. I am deeply upset that Aaron has suffered such a bad injury and my thoughts are with him.
"I would like to send him my best wishes too for a speedy recovery."

Shawcross's tackle was deemed so unpalatable that television coverage refused to show replays of the incident.
