Liverpool legend Ian Rush believes that Ruud van Nistelrooy would be a perfect short-term signing to share the goalscoring burden at Anfield with Fernando Torres.

Van Nistelrooy has fallen by the wayside after the arrival of Karim Benzema at Real Madrid and could be set to move on in January in search of first-team football.

The former Manchester United striker has also indicated his willingness to return to the Premier League where he enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Old Trafford.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benítez is desperate to add some fire power to his misfiring team and Rush believes van Nistelrooy would provide the ideal remedy.

Speaking to promote ESPN’s live coverage of Liverpool v Wolves on Boxing Day, Rush said: "Although Torres is a fantastic player, I don’t think he can shoulder the burden alone.

"Sometimes Torres needs a break, and if Rafa has only one wish on his wish-list in the transfer window, I hope it’s a top-class striker.

"I would love to see him bring in someone like van Nistelrooy, a proven goalscorer with experience at the highest level.

"In terms of strength in depth, that’s an area where Liverpool have been lacking and world-class predators like him don’t become available every day of the week.

"It doesn’t bother me where he’s played before - all it would take is a couple of goals and the supporters would take to him in a flash."
