Fiorentina open to Melo-Eboué swap

Fiorentina are prepared to sell Felipe Melo to Arsenal if defender Emmanuel Eboué is included as part of the exchange.

Melo had been strongly linked with the Gunners only to sign a one-year contract extension with the Viola that includes a €25 million release clause.

Recent reports have suggested Juventus had reached an agreement with Melo’s agents, and that the Bianconeri would meet with Fiorentina officials on Tuesday in order to conclude a transfer fee.

However, Fiorentina have now claimed that Arsenal are the only club to have tabled an offer for the Brazil international.

A statement on the club's official website, www.violachannel.tv, read: "Fiorentina sporting director Pantaleo Corvino, in denying the transfer rumours of the past few hours, which sees Felipe Melo definitely at other clubs and reporting potential meetings to finalise the transfer of the player, underlines the following:

"If the player has already reached an agreement of his own with any other club, the buy-out clause is set at £21m with no other players involved in the exchange unless they are wanted by Fiorentina.

"Arsenal is the only club to have come close to the sum established by the release clause.

"Fiorentina have in turn proposed to Arsenal that they can reduce the cash sum by including right-back Eboué into the deal."

Eboué, who arrived in North London from Beveren in January 2005, has recently grown unsettled at Emirates Stadium and has not ruled out an exit.

"It would be hard but I think it would be harder to experience another season like this one," the 26-year-old told the BBC.

"In any case, if I leave Arsenal it would be for another league because it is out of the question that I develop elsewhere in England."
