Real Madrid sporting director Jorge Valdano has declared that his club are no longer trying to bring in David Villa from Valencia.
El Guaje had been a leading target for Los Merengues and he was widely expected to move to the Bernabéu this summer.
But the long-running saga took a big twist on Friday when Los Che announced they had taken the star striker off the market.
"The situation with Villa is 100 percent finished," said Valdano to Radio Nacional de Espana.
"There was a call from president to president in which Valencia told us that Villa was not for sale.
"We understand that we need to go for an alternative and that is what we are working on."
When asked if Diego Forlán, Karim Benzema or Zlatan Ibrahimović are part of the alternative plan, Valdano replied: "They have enough quality to play for Madrid, but this does not mean we are working towards signing one of them."
