Bundesliga leaders VfL Wolfsburg have confirmed coach Felix Magath will leave the club at the end of the season as he is expected to takeover at Schalke.

The 55-year-old has been at the centre of intense speculation linking him with a move to Schalke over the last week and, after a meeting with the Wolfsburg management, it was agreed his contract will be terminated by mutual consent this summer.

"We owe Magath a great thanks already now, four rounds before the end of the season, for the development of the team over the past two years," Wolfsburg's chairman of the board, Hans Dieter Pötsch, said in a statement.

"He's achieved an extraordinary sporting success in a very short time. We wish him all the best in his future coaching career," he said.

Magath added: "We have reached the goals we set ourselves far quicker than how we had planned them together when I took over here in the summer of 2007.

"The team is young, can still be improved and has good prospects which remain bound to the club."

The former Bayern Munich coach could bring Wolfsburg their first Bundesliga title before departing as they currently lead the league by three points from Bayern with four matches of the season remaining.
