Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton has heaped praise on Paul Scholes ahead of what could be the midfielder's 600th appearance for the Red Devils, which is likely to be on Wednesday evening against Portsmouth.

Scholes - one of the greatest but most unassuming figures to play the game - will become the fourth player in the club’s history to make 600 appearances, behind Ryan Giggs, Sir Bobby and Bill Foulkes.

Ever since establishing himself in the team 15 years ago, Scholes has been the model professional, admired by his manager, team-mates, opponents and fans.

Sir Bobby played with the likes of Duncan Edwards, Dennis Law and George Best during a spell between 1956-1973, but he places Scholes as his all-time favourite player

"Many great players have worn the shirt of Manchester United. Players I worshipped, then lost with my youth in Munich," Sir Bobby told The Sun.

"Players like Denis Law and George Best who I enjoyed so much as team-mates and now, finally, players I have watched closely in the Ferguson era.

"And in so many ways Scholes is my favourite. I love his nous and conviction that he’ll find a way to win, to make the killer pass or produce a decisive volley.

"When a game reaches a vital phase, these qualities seem to come out of his every pore. He’s always on the ball. He’s always looking to bring other people into the action and if he loses possession you think he must be ill."
