Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Čech has been named the Czech Republic's Player of the Year for 2008, following a poll of players, coaches, officials and journalists.

The Blues shot-stopper has won 65 caps for the Czech Republic since making his debut in 2002 and was also named as his country's top performer in 2005.

The 26-year-old finished ahead of Juventus veteran Pavel Nedvěd, who finished as runner-up, and Atlético Madrid defender Tomáš Ujfaluši, who had to settle for third place.

"Thanks to everyone who voted for me," Čech said on his personal website.

"Those people must have rated my performances over the course of the whole year and not just the unlucky match against Turkey."

Čech is referring to his blunder during the Euro 2008 when a rare handling mistake on his part saw the Turks progress to the quarter-finals of the competition at the Czech Republic's expense.

Meanwhile, Karel Jarolím, coach of 2007-08 Czech champions Slavia Prague, was named coach of the year.
