Dirk Kuyt 78 | Craig Bellamy 51 |
Craig Bellamy scored on his comeback to Anfield as Manchester City earned a 1-1 draw against Liverpool, leaving the Reds seven points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United.
City should have scored after 30 minutes when Andrea Dossena lost possession and the ball was switched immediately to Robinho, who laid a pass invitingly into Stephen Ireland's stride. The midfielder had a free run at Pepe Reina, but the Spanish keeper blocked the first shot, with Ireland firing the rebound into the side netting.
The Citizens finally broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when Bellamy struck a shot from the edge of the area that flicked off Álvaro Arbeloa and flew past Reina into the far corner.
This was the fourth time this season that Bellamy, who grew up as a huge Liverpool fan and spent a season as a player at Anfield two years ago, has scored against a former club, having netted for West Ham against Newcastle and Blackburn, and for City also against Newcastle.
Liverpool fought back as Dirk Kuyt prodded a 78th minute equaliser from Yossi Benayoun's cross, even though it came from a total miskick from that usually deadliest of predators Fernando Torres.
Kuyt then forced Shay Given to produce a fine save from his 25-yard cracker before Benayoun saw his close range effort also blocked by the Irishman.
The Reds had a penalty claim waved away when Benayoun’s follow-up header struck Richard Dunne’s arm as it deflected away.
