Michael Owen rejects Newcastle offer

Michael Owen has rejected the latest contract offer made by Newcastle, according to the Daily Mail.

His current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and after months of delay manager Joe Kinnear finally convinced club owner Mike Ashley to open talks over a new deal.

However, Owen and his representatives were less than receptive to the Toon's offer, which would supposedly see the player earn ₤25 000 less than he is currently earning.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker, who arrived at St James' Park in a £17 million move from the Bernabéu in 2005, is believed to run down the remainder of his current deal and then during the summer recess will be looking for a new club.

Liverpool, along with Merseyside rivals Everton and cashed-up Manchester City, appear to be the most likely clubs that will enter into the race to secure his signature for the next season.
