Zenit St Petersburg beat Manchester United 2-1 to become the first Russian team to win the European Super Cup in Monaco.

United won the Champions League in Moscow last May when they defeated Chelsea on penalties, a week after Dick Advocaat led Zenit claimed the UEFA Cup in Manchester by beating Glasgow Rangers.

Zenit left their unsettled star Andrei Arshavin on the bench for the first half and fielded new Portuguese midfielder Danny, signed for a Russian record £24 million from Dynamo Moscow earlier this week.

Pavel Pogrebnyak gave the 2007 Russian champions a deserved lead in the 44th minute, heading in from close range after Igor Denisov flicked on a corner from Alejandro Domínguez.

Arshavin, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, came on for Zenit at the start of the second half.

Danny doubled the lead in the 59th minute when he sliced through the United defense before beating Edwin van der Sar with a low shot.

Nemanja Vidić pulled a goal back for United in the 73rd minute and substitute John O'Shea almost pulled United level in the 88th when his header was tipped away by goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeev.

The Red Devils finished the match with 10 men after midfielder Paul Scholes was shown a second yellow card in injury time for punching the ball into the net, and will now be suspended for Champions League opener against Villarreal.
