Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will become Chelsea’s new manager on July 1.

Chelsea said in a statement: "Chelsea Football Club is delighted to confirm that Luiz Felipe Scolari will be the club's new manager from July 1, 2008."

The Blues announced the replacement for Avram Grant on its website, after Portugal secured a quarterfinal spot by beating the Czech Republic 3-1.

The 59-year-old was one of several high-profile candidates linked with the The Blues as sacked Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini, former Barcelona boss Frank Rijkaard and Russia coach Guus Hiddink had all also been linked to the job.

Scolari turned down England coaching job before in 2006.

He declined the offer to replace Sven-Goran Eriksson after being irritated by the English media intrusion and because he didn’t want to make a decision before — or during — the World Cup.

Scolari, also known Big Phil, has never managed a European club, but has won several domestic honours as coach of various top Brazilian clubs including Gremio, Palmeiras and Cruzeiro.

He is is known for his bad temperament but has a shiny record of success with his biggest achievement was leading Brazil to the World Cup title in 2002.

Portugal and Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo backed the move and could face Scolari next season if he stays at United.

Scolari will become the first Brazilian to manage an English club, and the fourth coach at Chelsea since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich took over the club in 2003.

His presence is sure to take Chelsea to put an end to United's two-season supremacy in the Premier League.

Chelsea finished without any title last season as they lost to United in the domestic league and then also got beat by United in the Champions League final in Moscow.
