James Rodríguez scored one of the greatest goals in World Cup history as Colombia shoved aside Uruguay 2-0 in their round of 16 clash at the Estádio Maracanã on Saturday.

Colombia dominated possession in a nervy opening as Uruguay started on the defensive, and it took a moment of magic from Rodríguez to break them down.

The 22-year-old has been outstanding throughout the tournament and he again showed his star quality with an outstanding volley after 28 minutes.

Álvaro Pereira headed away a cross out to Colombia's Abel Aguilar, who headed it back to Rodríguez on the edge of the penalty area.

With his back to goal, Rodríguez controlled the ball on his chest and then volleyed a ferocious left-footed shot that Fernando Muslera just touched before it crashed into the underside off the bar and into the net.

The AS Monaco playmaker added gloss to his own display by netting a second five minutes after the break, sending him to the top of the scorers chart with five goals.

"It's historic, a dream come true. I always wanted to score in the Maracanã and now I have," Rodríguez said afterwards.

Colombia coach José Pékerman added: "It's great to have a player like James Rodríguez and his confidence was very high after our previous game."
