Goal of the day: Gilberto (Toronto FC) vs NY Red Bulls
Table of Contents
Toronto FC striker Gilberto scored his first ever MLS goal with a venomous free-kick in a 2-2 draw with the New York Red Bulls on Friday at Red Bull Arena.
The hosts drew first blood on 36 minutes through Péguy Luyindula, but Jermain Defoe equalised in the 55th minute with a beautiful one-touch finish.
Toronto then took the lead in the 72nd minute in spectacular fashion as Defoe was fouled just outside of the box to earn a free-kick.
The former Tottenham Hotspur striker grabbed the ball to take the set piece, but Gilberto stepped in, insisting that he take the kick, which looked to put off Defoe.
But the Brazilian backed up his assertion to take the strike when he unleashed the free-kick with a powerful shot that left New York goalkeeper Luis Robles with no chance.
However, Toronto's bid for all three points on the road would be quashed in stoppage time by Bradley Wright-Phillips.
"It was probably always going to happen like that, something where it was pretty spectacular," Toronto coach Ryan Nelsen told MLSsoccer.com
"That was a world-class goal and it will probably be in the highlight reel for a long time!"
