The Sounders wasted little time putting the Earthquakes on their back heels with a potential MLS Goal of the Year candidate from Martins.

With the Sounders on the break, Gonzalo Pineda lofted a pass into the penalty box from the left flank.

Martins then shielded defender Jordan Stewart, let the ball bounce once and hit an unforgettable left-footed volley from an impossibly tight angle with his first touch.

The ball floated gently into the side of the net, leaving Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch looking on in disbelief.

After the match, Busch said of the goal: "You tip your cap to him. That's a big-time finish from that angle.

"The only place you expect him to put it is at the near post. That's the only angle he's got, and somehow he finds the back post.

"There's nothing you can do. Doesn't matter who you are or where you play, that's a good goal."

Sounders coach Sigi Schmid added: "The guile he has to get a touch on it and get it over Busch, it's an athletic ability. You can't teach that. It's something that somebody has.

"It's definitely as good a goal as has been scored here."

"I don't know a lot of other people in the league who can pull that off," said Sounders teammate Chad Marshall.
