A previously pedestrian contest was then brought to life in the 32nd minute by Sturridge.

Taking a throw from Liverpool teammate Glen Johnson, Sturridge seemed to be cutting back away from goal.

Then, with a shake of the hips he took the ball on to his trusty left and curled a sublime effort beyond the dive of Peru goalkeeper Raúl Fernández.

Leighton Baines provided the cross for Gary Cahill to head home England's second in the 65th minute, before Phil Jagielka capitalised on a goalkeeping error to net a third.

"It was a quick throw from Johnno, I took it across and just whipped it in," Sturridge told FATV.

"It happened quite quickly, so can't remember it as much, so I'd like to see it again because I don't know what it looks like."
