The Midlanders took the lead through Leandro Bacuna on 35 minutes, but substitute Steven Naismith restored parity with a neat finish in the 74th minute.

And Mirallas completed the comeback five minutes from time with a wonderful set-piece finish.

Ciaran Clark was adjudged to have clattered into the back of Mirallas and referee Bobby Madley awarded a free-kick 30 yards from goal.

The Belgium international dusted himself down, took aim and curled a right-footed set-play over the Villa wall and into the corner of the net.

"To win it with that moment of brilliance from Kevin in a dead-ball situation is even more pleasing," Everton boss Roberto Martínez said after the match.

Villa manager Paul Lambert added: "I think the second goal you hold your hands up and say it's a world-class free-kick, and you can't do anything about that."
