Playing against opponents who held them in La Liga on Saturday, the Catalans trailed at the break to Nabil El Zhar's 31st-minute goal.

Barcelona were more inspired after the break and levelled proceedings in bizarre circumstances on 53 minutes.

Lionel Messi threaded in a dangerous ball to Cristian Tello, who cut inside and shot weakly at Levante goalkeeper Javi Jiménez.

Jiménez, though, was unable to hold onto the ball and Loukas Vyntra's attempted clearance struck the leg of Juanfran and into the net.

Things went from bad to worse for Levante as Tello went on to score a hat-trick in the 60th, 81st and 86th minutes.

"Their first goal affected us. That was the goal that changed things," said Levante coach Joaquín Caparrós afterwards.
