Goal of the day: Niall McGinn (Aberdeen) vs St Johnstone
Table of Contents
Aberdeen striker Niall McGinn scored a jaw-dropping strike to seal a great 2-0 win over St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park.
Former Aberdeen manager Sir Alex Ferguson was present on Saturday as a guest of the home club to mark the 50th anniversary of his hat-trick for St Johnstone in a 3-2 victory over Glasgow Rangers.
But it was Aberdeen - the club Ferguson steered to domestic and European glory - who took the honours after a bright, enterprising display.
Peter Pawlett opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a crisp left-foot finish after a nice back-heel by Scott Vernon.
The Dons saved their best to last, though, as McGinn's solo run and wonderful finish made sure of the points.
The 26-year-old picked the ball up inside his own half, embarked on a lung-bursting run before curling his shot just inside the angle of post and bar.
"What a finish, it was still flying at pace when it hit the back of the net," Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes told BBC Scotland commenting on McGinn's goal.
