Comedy Own Goal! Vasilios Torosidis (Greece) vs Romania
Table of Contents
A bizarre own goal from Vasilios Torosidis could not prevent Greece from securing their place at next summer's World Cup with a 4-2 aggregate win over Romania.
Holding a 3-1 advantage from the opening leg, Fernando Santos' men went into the return leg in Bucharest looking to wrap up the tie.
And Greece were able to stretch their advantage as Konstantinos Mitroglou, who scored twice last Friday at Piraeus, netted in the 23rd minute on Tuesday.
Romania pulled one back 10 minutes after the break, although it took a huge slice of luck to give them a glimmer of hope.
Some neat build-up play ended with Ovidiu Hoban rolling a ball inside from the edge of the area, and Torosidis' clearance struck past his own goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis and looped into the top corner.
Fortunately for Torosidis, there was to be no dramatic comeback as Greece held on to book their passage to Brazil.
