In a first half of few chances, César Azpilicueta scored his first goal for the Blues in the 25th minute following a mistake from Carl Jenkinson.

The lead was doubled three-quarters of the way through the match in a more spectacular fashion.

Samuel Eto'o helped a Ryan Bertrand throw-in towards Willian, who flicked his header back to Mata on the edge of the area.

The Spaniard took a deft touch with his left and then struck an unstoppable drive with his right boot past Łukasz Fabiański and into the far corner.

Mata has now scored in three consecutive games against the Gunners.

"We have seen that from him many times before, although maybe it's a surprise to see it with his right foot," assistant first team coach Steve Holland told a press conference.

"He has started his fair share of games but it was a fantastic moment."
