The English champions were made to look mediocre at times by their opponents who are flying high in their domestic league midway through their season.

While the story may have been written for Robin van Persie to score on his 30th birthday, it was another Robin, AIK's Quaison, who broke the deadlock on 49 minutes with a stunning strike.

An Alhassan Kamara flick allowed the 19-year-old to turn past Nemanja Vidić and curl an unstoppable strike from 20 yards past substitute goalkeeper Ben Amos.

It completely took Amos by surprise, before he had even touched the ball after coming on as Anders Lindegaard replacement.

But David Moyes had Ángelo Henríquez to thank for netting the goal that earned them a draw midway through the second period.
