De Rosario, who played for Toronto in parts of three seasons from 2009 to 2011, opened the scoring after 10 minutes in spectacular fashion.

United midfielder Perry Kitchen played a looping pass to De Rosario at the edge of the area.

The 35-year-old dribbled towards the center of the pitch and cut back past two Toronto players.

De Rosario then let loose on a wicked right-footed curler that found its way past Toronto goalkeeper Joe Bendik.

It was De Rosario's third goal of the season and first since June 15, when he also scored against Toronto.

The lead stood until the 60th minute when Bobby Convey neatly finished off a pass from Reggie Lambe.

"I kind of like hitting the ball from that area. I caught a good whip on it and fortunately it was able to go in the back of the net," De Rosario said after the match.

Asked whether he knew the audacious strike had a chance at finding the back of the net, De Rosario replied: "Every time I shoot, I think it has a chance."

Toronto boss Ryan Nelsen added: "When you concede a world-class goal like that away from home, it takes a lot of character to come back."
