A benchwarmer for the club's first three games of the new campaign, the 24-year-old has not had a single kick yet in the Premier League.

Believing Kagawa to be far better than just a benchwarmer, BVB supporters decided to launch the online movement under #FreeShinji hashtag on Twitter.

The hope is that the #FreeShinji group can rile up enough Dortmund fans to convince their club to re-sign Kagawa before the transfer window closes late on Monday night.

However, this viral campaign is unlikely will be a success as coach Jürgen Klopp admitted the club enquired about bringing Kagawa back earlier in the summer, but the move hit an immediate brick wall.

"(Coming back) is not an option for him this year and not an option for us," Klopp said. "This was made obvious quite quickly.

"Shinji wants to prove himself at Man United this season. I didn't think the response would be any different but better safe than sorry."
