Goal of the day: Camilo (Whitecaps) vs Sporting KC
Table of Contents
An inch-perfect free-kick from Camilo only seconds before halftime salvaged a 1-1 draw for the Vancouver Whitecaps at Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday.
The hosts took the lead in the 35th minute when Chance Myers nodded down a cross for Aurélien Collin, who scored on his second shot after his initial effort was blocked.
The lead didn't make it to the half, though, as Camilo snatched the lead from Sporting KC on the last play before the break.
Referee Ricardo Salazar whistled Sporting's Soony Saad for a foul on Johnny Leverón 25 yards from goal.
A few players - Camilo, Leverón and Daigo Kobayashi - stood over the ball, with the left-footed Leverón looking like he was going to hit it.
But there was only one man who was going to take the ball, especially given his form.
Camilo stepped up and curled the ball into the upper-corner of the net for his 10th goal of the season.
"I knew I was going to take it when the foul (was called)," Camilo said. "This is my position. I am comfortable taking those shots. It is what I can do for the team."
Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie added: "It was fantastic. He works a lot on his free kicks and that was a fantastic hit.
"It was a great goal and I don't think there are many people that are going to save that."
