John Aves has been a Cambridge City supporter since the 1960s and spent six years sitting in the home team dugout as the club's physiotherapist.

Cambridge's football ground on Milton Road is set to be bulldozed and bits of it were being auctioned off, so two friends thought it would make the perfect wedding gift for football-mad John.

John, 59, told the Cambridge News: "A couple of mates of mine, Steve Gawthrop and Paul Maddox, knew I'd spent a good many years in the dugout when I was physio for the team, and they thought it would be fun to buy it for me.

"I've been a Cambridge City fan since 1962 when my dad took me to my first match, and in the mid-70s I was club secretary, before later becoming the physio.

"I had no idea that they'd bought the dugout. It was a really cool surprise."

The next question for John and his wife Caroline, 39, is what to do with the shelter.

He added: "We reckon it will go at the bottom of our garden, as an unusual place for a sit-down.

"It's a bit long, though, so we'll have to get it sawn in half."
