The 21-year-old was an unused substitute for Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby against Everton last weekend, and found himself relegated to the U-21 side to get more game time under his belt.

Shelvey was clearly stung by that snub, for it took him just five minutes to make his mark at Old Trafford, and what a goal it was.

Taking a pass from Suso, he smashed home smashed home an absolute belter from 25 yards out, giving Ben Amos in United goals no chance.

It will have satisfied Shelvey to get on the scoresheet, after being sent off for Liverpool's first team against United at Anfield earlier this season.

The game ended 1-1 after Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan scored an own goal in the final 10 minutes.
