Hertzog's half-volley from 35 yards came in the 58th minute and ended any hopes of an Edmonton comeback.

A high ball was headed down by Russell Teibert into the path of Hertzog.

The 22-year-old striker took aim from well outside the area and produced a powerful shot that flew past Edmonton goalkeeper Lance Parker into the bottom corner.

Nine minutes later, Edmonton's Shaun Saiko headed a corner kick into his own net to seal the Whitecaps' progress.

"I just figured it was taking that hop and I just hit it right off the half-volley," half-time substitute Hertzog told reporters. "It was a nice shot."

Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie added: "It was a great shot and a fantastic goal that opened the game up for us."

"I thought he worked really hard, he's an exciting prospect for the club, he has got an eye for goal and he brings good attributes to the team."
