In a heart-warming gift from Everton, Leighton Baines personally delivered a new season ticket to a loyal fan who recently lost his wife to illness.
When Gordon McKee's wife was diagnosed with a brain tumour five years ago, the selfless man dedicated his life to caring for her, sometimes for 24 hours a day.
She lost that battle, but Mr McKee was nominated for Everton's "Make Their Day" initiative by his son Andrew for his kind and tireless work.
Baines then turned up on his doorstep on Friday afternoon and handed over the 2013/14 ticket, as well as a bouquet of flowers and a signed jersey from the England international.
"We knew what a tough week it's been for Gordon but I am pleased to cheer him up a little bit, as much as you can at a time like this," Baines told evertonTV.
"We're looking forward to seeing him at Goodison next year.
"The decision was made that we should still go ahead and call in. I'm glad to see it's a put a smile on his face.
"As insignificant as these things seem, it can brighten up someone's day."
Mr McKee admitted he had been taken by surprise by the player's visit.
He said: "I had no idea what to expect. I had been out shopping and my family said, 'Get back home quick', but I didn't expect that, it's the biggest shock of my life."
