An own goal from Rennes central defender Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik put Evian ahead in the second minute, but the visitors levelled 20 minutes later through a goal from Julien Féret.

But Evian were running hot and got the lead back with Bérigaud registering one of the strikes of the season in the 34th minute.

The 24-year-old striker latched onto Mohammed Rabiu's headed pass and unleashed a crunching first-time volley which had Rennes goalkeeper Benoît Costil beaten all ends up.

Rennes rallied again in the 69th minute when John Boye scored but Evian emphatically claimed victory after Miloš Ninković and Yannick Sagbo struck in the closing stages.

"Kévin Bérigaud proved on his own that our little Savoie region has its qualities," said Evian coach Pascal Dupraz afterwards.
