Both sides went into the game looking for the three points that would maintain their European ambitions.

Brazilian playmaker Hernanes gave the visitors in blue a great start to the game with a stunning strike in the 16th minute.

Senad Lulić countered from a Roma corner and he picked out the unmarked Hernanes in space 25 yards from goal.

The 27-year-old found himself in plenty of space to take aim and launch an unstoppable effort past Maarten Stekelenburg and into the top corner.

Hernanes had the opportunity to double Lazio's lead, but his penalty miss allowed the Giallorossi to stay in a game they eventually drew 1-1.

"Sometimes football can provide incredible surprises," Hernanes told Italia 2.

"It seemed like it would be an unforgettable evening for me. After a nice goal I could have got the second with a penalty, but then everything changed. It was just amazing."
